Chapel of Santa Maria del Tresto

1 Minute of reading

Not far from Stroncone at the Prati, immersed in a cedar wood, stands a small chapel dedicated to the Madonna known as Madonna del Tresto, named after the place and now known as Santa Maria.

Cappellina di Santa Maria del Tresto

It was a refuge where pilgrims and shepherds with their flocks could take shelter in case of rain.
From a local chronicle, it is reported that in 1738 a shepherdess, sheltering in the chapel, heard the Madonna depicted on a panel asking to be moved to a more decent place than that makeshift shelter which was open on two sides. In 1738, the precious image was moved in a solemn procession to the oratory of San Rocco, where it is still venerated today.
