Crypt of San Biagio

1 Minute of reading

In the small square of Coppe once stood a parish church and only its ancient crypt, once dedicated to the Madonna, remains today.

Cripta di San Biagio

Inside, one can admire a beautiful fresco depicting the Madonna Enthroned with Child between St. John the Baptist and another saint who, according to popular tradition, could be St. Blaise, the patron saint of Coppe, recognisable by the iron comb he holds in his hand, the symbol of his martyrdom. In the upper part one can see Christ with his right hand raised in a blessing act and the inscription: 'I am the light of the world'. The fresco is attributed to Angelo di Menicuccio da Vignanello, a painter and engraver in Orvieto.
