San Michele Arcangelo Church

2 Minutes of reading

Dedicated to the Archangel St. Michael, the patron saint of Stroncone, it has taken on the appearance of a 17th century church after various interventions at different times. It has a basilica plan with three naves, a baptismal font and is the main church

Chiesa San Michele Arcangelo

Together with the Oratory of S. Giovanni Decollato, it is the most beautiful and finely decorated church in Stroncone. On an artistic level, of particular note are: the Chapel of the Madonna of the Rosary, with an altarpiece by Bartolomeo Barbiani dated 1628, depicting the Madonna with Child in her arms in the act of distributing a rosary; the Chapel of the Crucifix, with a wooden Crucifix of great beauty and value, dated to around the second half of the 14th century; the Chapel of the Guardian Angel, with a beautiful altarpiece depicting the guardian angel in the act of reprimanding a young man, a well-executed 17th-century work of art; the Chapel of Our Lady of Carmine, with a fine marble statue of the Blessed Virgin of Carmine; and the Chapel of the Holy Family, with an altarpiece depicting the Holy Family, a work of art by the Nazarene painters of the last century.

The apse features three wooden statues: St. Michael the Archangel, titular of the church, St. Peter and St. Vincent de Paul; around them are the stories of the Archangel Michael and the saints that the people of Stroncone are particularly devoted to. The vault features stucco decorations and ornamentation by the Grimani brothers. Of particular interest near the high altar is the tabernacle of holy oils, a valuable work of marble from the 15th century, brought from Rome by the notary Giovan Battista Umani, knight and Count Palatine, at a cost of 22 ducats.

Due to seismic events, the church is unfortunately unfit for use at the moment.
