Church of San Pietro

2 Minutes of reading

What immediately strikes one who arrives in this village is the small Romanesque apse of the small church built in the 12th century, with a crown of hanging arches and in the centre, a slightly splayed opening between small elegant pillars.

Chiesa di San Pietro

On the outside, there is a beautiful travertine portal from 1417 with four lovely friezes decorating the brackets supporting the architrave. The interior of the present church, with a single nave, is very simple and with few works of art: relics from the 17th century immediately to the left after the entrance, a very old fresco depicting St. Peter, no longer visible, a beautiful 16th-century tabernacle in gilded wood with side niches and a railing.

On the wall to the right, a beautiful painting from 1587 depicts Our Lady of the Rosary and a Child holding the world in his left hand, while with his right hand he is holding the Virgin's neck in the act of distributing the rosary to the figures below. On the left in the foreground, we can see St. Dominic and some crowned figures, a pontiff with a tiara is kneeling and absorbed in prayer; on the right, some young girls, two of which have jewelled crowns on their heads, are kneeling and praying. All around, 15 medallions represent the mysteries of the rosary. Outside the painting are St. Apollonia on the right and St. Lucia on the left under some elegant friezes.
